Bubble.io · Testing
The tools for testing and debugging, a ten-step routine for testing a change, a seven-step debugging process, common causes and a pre-release checklist.

Quick answer
Test and debug systematically: use a separate test version, the platform’s debugger, previewing as another user, logs and test accounts for each role. For each change, test the changed behaviour and nearby features, test as each role, try to break it, test access control with multiple accounts, check emails, integrations and phones, record results and check key flows on live afterwards. To debug, reproduce, narrow down, look at what ran, check data and privacy rules, change one thing at a time, retest and record the fix. Check Bubble’s current documentation for tool details.
Key takeaways
- Use a test version, the debugger, previewing as another user, logs and role-based test accounts.
- Test changed behaviour and neighbouring features, as every role, including access control.
- Debug by reproducing, narrowing, inspecting what ran, checking data and privacy rules, changing one thing at a time.
- Empty lists often mean privacy rules or non-matching conditions.
- Record the cause and add a check so the bug does not return.

Why test and debug systematically?
Most app problems are found by users, at the worst moment, because the builder only tried the path that works. Systematic testing and debugging replace guesswork with a routine: try the app as each type of user, try to break it deliberately, and use the platform’s tools to see what is happening when something goes wrong.
The tools you have
| Tool | What it helps with |
|---|---|
| A separate test version | Trying changes without touching live data or users |
| The platform’s debugger | Stepping through workflows and inspecting values and conditions to see what ran and why |
| Previewing as another user | Seeing exactly what a client, staff member or admin sees, which is vital for privacy rules |
| Server logs and run history | Finding what happened in backend workflows and scheduled jobs |
| Test accounts | Realistic users for each role, with realistic data |
| Browser developer tools | Inspecting what the page loads and sends |
| A test checklist | Making sure the same things are checked every time |
Bubble offers a debugger, ways to preview as another user and logs of workflow runs. Check its current documentation for exactly how each works.
A routine for testing a change
- Read what changed. List the pages, workflows and data affected.
- Test the changed behaviour in the test version, with test data.
- Test around it. Check nearby features that share the same data or workflow.
- Test as each role, especially after any change to data or privacy rules.
- Try to break it: empty fields, very long text, wrong formats, double-clicks, back buttons.
- Test access control by trying to reach another user’s data. See our security guide.
- Test emails and integrations with test credentials.
- Check on phones. See our responsive design guide.
- Record the results and fix problems before deploying.
- Check key flows on live after release.
How to debug a problem
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Reproduce it | Find the exact steps, user and data that cause it |
| 2. Narrow it down | Is it one user or many? One page or everywhere? Since when? Did anything change recently? |
| 3. Look at what ran | Use the debugger or logs to see which workflow ran, which conditions passed and what values were used |
| 4. Check the data | Is the data what you expect? Are privacy rules hiding something? |
| 5. Form a theory and test it | Change one thing at a time in the test version |
| 6. Fix and retest | Confirm the fix and that nothing else broke |
| 7. Record it | Note the cause and fix, and add a test so it does not return |
Common causes of problems
- Privacy rules hiding data from a role, so a list looks empty.
- Conditions that do not match the data as it really is.
- Empty values that the workflow did not expect.
- Workflows that run twice, creating duplicates.
- Differences between test and live, such as keys, settings or data.
- Integration failures or changed provider behaviour.
- Scheduled jobs that did not run or ran too often.
- Performance limits from heavy searches. See workload units.
A pre-release test checklist
| Area | Checks |
|---|---|
| Access | Register, log in, reset password, log out |
| Each role’s main tasks | Complete the key flows as client, staff and admin |
| Privacy | Two accounts try to see each other’s data and files. Low-permission roles try restricted actions |
| Forms | Required fields, wrong formats, long text |
| Emails | Content, links, sender and delivery |
| Payments | Success, failure and cancellation in test mode |
| Scheduled tasks | Run in the test version and check results |
| Devices | Phone, tablet and desktop |
| Performance | Realistic data volumes |
Mistakes to avoid
- Testing only the happy path.
- Testing only as an admin.
- Building and testing on the live app.
- Changing several things at once while debugging.
- Not recording what was found.
- Skipping access tests after privacy rule changes.
- No check of live after release.
How we work
At Simple Automation Solutions, builds run on a separate test version with regular demos, and we test with multiple accounts before launch. Support and fixes after launch are billed from $35 per hour, with no retainers or minimums. Builds start at $3,500, typically launching in 2 to 6 weeks. See our process from discovery to launch, our guide to user acceptance testing and what to cut before you build.
Frequently asked questions
How do I debug a Bubble app?
Reproduce the problem, narrow it down, use the debugger and logs to see which workflows ran and why, check the data and privacy rules, change one thing at a time in the test version, then retest and record the fix.
Why does a list look empty for some users?
Often because privacy rules hide the data from that role, or a condition does not match the data. Preview as that user to see what they see.
Should I test on the live app?
No. Use a separate test version and check key flows on live only after release.
What should I test before every release?
Changed behaviour and nearby features, every role’s main tasks, access control, forms, emails, payments, scheduled tasks and devices.
How do I stop the same bug coming back?
Record the cause and fix, and add a check to your test list.
Want an experienced eye on your testing?
Email us what the app does and how you release changes. We will review your routine and run an access test.
