Rescue · Audit

An app you did not build and cannot read is a risk. Follow this four-step audit to find out whether to fix it or start again.

Maybe a previous developer disappeared. Maybe the app was built quickly and now struggles with real users. Maybe you have inherited a Bubble.io project and have no idea what is inside it. This is a common and stressful situation, and the good news is that it is usually more fixable than it feels.

This guide gives you a practical audit you can follow, signs that point to fixing versus rebuilding and a sensible way to move forward without wasting more money.

Step 1: Secure access and ownership

  • Confirm you are the owner of the Bubble account and the app, not the former developer.
  • Check who has editor access and remove people who should not have it.
  • List every connected service: domain, payments, email, analytics, API keys.
  • Make sure credentials are in your hands, ideally in a password manager.

If you do not own the account, resolve that first. Everything else depends on it.

Step 2: Audit the app

AreaWhat to checkWarning sign
Privacy rulesCan one user see another’s data?Data visible to people who should not see it
Data structureAre data types clear and logical?Duplicate fields, confusing names, data repeated in many places
PerformanceHow do key pages load with realistic data?Slow lists and searches, heavy pages
WorkflowsAre they understandable and tested?Long unexplained chains, workflows on every page load
PluginsAre they needed and maintained? Many unused or abandoned plugins
VersionsIs there a separate test version?Changes made directly on the live app
Usage costIs workload consumption reasonable?Bills rising faster than usage. See workload units
DocumentationIs anything written down?Nothing explains how it works

Start with privacy rules. A security hole matters more than a slow page. Our security guide and database design mistakes explain what to look for.

Step 3: Decide between fix and rebuild

Lean towards fixing whenLean towards rebuilding when
The data structure is mostly soundThe data model is fundamentally wrong
Problems are in specific pages or workflowsProblems are everywhere and interlinked
Privacy rules can be added or correctedSecurity fundamentals are missing across the app
Users are happy with the featuresThe product no longer matches the business
The app can be understood by a new developer in a reasonable timeNobody can explain how it works and it keeps breaking
Rule of thumb: fixing is cheaper when the foundation is sound. A weak foundation makes every fix slower and riskier, and at some point rebuilding costs less than endless repairs.

Step 4: Stabilise before you add anything

  1. Make a backup and set up a separate test version.
  2. Fix security issues first.
  3. Fix the slowest or most broken flows next.
  4. Write down how the app works as you go.
  5. Only then add new features.

What a good audit gives you

  • A prioritised list of problems with a rough cost to fix each.
  • A clear recommendation: fix, rebuild or partly rebuild.
  • A written description of the data model and workflows.
  • A plan and budget you can compare with other quotes.

How we approach it

We start by understanding what the app is supposed to do, then review it against the checklist above. Because the real need is a clear plan, our Discovery Sprint is a natural fit: a $345 PRD with scope, architecture and cost, delivered within 24 hours and credited toward any work that follows. Support and fixes after that are billed from $35 per hour, with no retainers and no minimums. See also what Bubble.io maintenance involves.

Frequently asked questions

Can another developer take over an app someone else built?

Usually yes, if you own the account and the app is understandable. Documentation and clean structure make it easier.

How long does an audit take?

It depends on the app’s size. A focused review of a typical app can be done quickly, and the result is a written plan.

What if the original developer will not hand over access?

If the app is in their account, you may need to negotiate or rebuild. Always keep your product in your own account in future.

Is Bubble the problem?

Rarely. Most issues come from planning, data design and missing review, not from the platform.

Inherited an app you do not understand?

Email us what it does and what is going wrong. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth fixing.
