GoHighLevel SMS Marketing: How to Run Compliant, High-Converting Text Campaigns

SMS marketing through GoHighLevel delivers open rates above 90% and response rates that email cannot match. But it also carries strict compliance requirements. This guide covers both: how to do it right and how to do it effectively.

Why SMS in GHL Is Genuinely Powerful

SMS has three advantages over every other marketing channel: open rates above 90% (versus 20-25% for email), median time-to-read of 3 minutes (versus hours for email), and the two-way conversation capability in GHL that turns broadcasts into real exchanges.

GHL’s unified conversations inbox means that when a contact replies to an automated SMS, you see it in the same inbox as their email, Facebook message, and phone call history. Your team responds in context, not in a separate SMS platform with no CRM connection.

Compliance β€” Non-Negotiable

SMS Law in the US, UK, and Pakistan

SMS marketing without proper compliance exposes your business to significant fines. Understand the rules before sending.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

United States β€” TCPA and A2P 10DLC

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act requires explicit written consent before sending marketing SMS. Additionally, all US business SMS must be sent via registered 10DLC (10-digit long code) numbers with carriers. Register your brand and campaign in GHL’s A2P registration section before sending any US SMS. Unregistered SMS is blocked by US carriers since 2023.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

United Kingdom β€” PECR

The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations require opt-in consent for marketing SMS. Soft opt-in is permitted for existing customers. Senders must identify themselves, provide an opt-out mechanism in every message, and honour opt-outs within 28 days. Fines from the ICO can reach Β£500,000.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡°

Pakistan β€” PTA Guidelines

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority regulates SMS marketing. Commercial SMS must be sent from registered senders, recipients must have consented, and opt-out mechanisms are required. Use GHL’s local number capability for Pakistani SMS to ensure sender registration compliance.

📌 The single most important rule across all jurisdictions: do not send marketing SMS to any contact who has not explicitly opted in to receive SMS from you. Import a phone number from a business card is not consent. A web form submission without an SMS opt-in checkbox is not consent.

Setting Up GHL for SMS

1

Acquire a GHL phone number

In GHL, go to Settings > Phone Numbers > Add Number. Select a local number in your target area code. US businesses sending marketing SMS must complete A2P 10DLC registration before the number will deliver marketing messages reliably.

2

Complete A2P 10DLC registration (US)

Navigate to Settings > Phone Numbers > A2P Registration. Register your brand (business name, EIN, website) and your campaign (describe the types of SMS you will send). Carrier approval takes 3-7 business days. Do not skip this β€” unregistered SMS is filtered by US carriers.

3

Build your opt-in flow

Create a GHL form with an explicit SMS opt-in checkbox: ‘I agree to receive text messages from [Business Name]. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.’ Map the checkbox to a custom field. Add a workflow that triggers when the checkbox is checked: add tag ‘sms-opted-in’. Only send marketing SMS to contacts with this tag.

4

Configure the STOP/opt-out handling

GHL automatically processes STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, and CANCEL replies by marking the contact as unsubscribed from SMS. Verify this is configured in your account settings. Never remove someone from the opt-out list or send SMS to opted-out contacts.

SMS Templates That Work

πŸ“₯

New Lead Response (send within 5 minutes)

‘Hi [First Name], thanks for reaching out about [service]! I have a few questions to make sure I can help. What is the biggest challenge you are currently facing with [problem area]?’ β€” Short, personal, opens a conversation.

πŸ“…

Appointment Reminder (24 hours before)

‘Hi [First Name], quick reminder: your call with [Your Name] is tomorrow at [Time]. Here is the link: [Calendar Link]. Reply to this message if you need to reschedule.’ β€” Clear, provides the action link, easy to reschedule.

⭐

Review Request (after service delivered)

‘Hi [First Name], it was great working with you on [project/service]. If you had a good experience, a Google review would mean a lot to us: [Google Review Link]. Takes under 2 minutes!’ β€” Personal, specific, easy action.

πŸ”„

Re-engagement (90-day inactive)

‘Hi [First Name], it has been a while! Are you still working on [relevant topic]? We have helped a few businesses like yours with [outcome] recently. Worth a quick chat? Reply YES and I will send you some times.’ β€” Specific, low commitment ask, easy to respond.

SMS + Automation = The Real Power

Standalone SMS blasts are useful. SMS integrated with GHL automation is transformational. The missed call text-back, the two-way appointment confirmation, the conditional re-engagement based on SMS reply β€” these are the automations that separate businesses using GHL at its full potential from those using it as an expensive text message tool.

Every SMS template above should be the first message in an automated workflow with conditional branches based on reply content β€” not a manual send. Build the workflow first, send the SMS as the first action, and let the automation handle what happens next based on the response.
